Mike grew up in Willingboro, New Jersey. He moved to Durham in 1985 after graduating from The Pennsylvania State University to work for GTE Corporation, which is now Verizon Communications. Mike worked for Verizon for 18 years and lived in Dallas, Texas from 1992 - 2002. He received his master's degree while living in Dallas.

In 2002, Mike became a partner in Coffey Grounds, Inc., John Coffey's land development business. Mike researches and purchases parcels of land. He also oversees the subdivision process so sites can be sold to individuals and builders. Managing all aspects of the development process, Mike works with the soil scientists, surveyors, land clearers, road graders and pavers. Ridge Springs, located near Valley Meadow in Northern Chatham County, was Mike and John's first joint venture. Valley Meadow is his second neighborhood.

Mike joined Prudential Carolinas Realty in 2005. His familiarity with the property and relationship with the builders made him a natural fit to co-list Valley Meadow with Erika Buchholtz.

With his knowledge of Chatham County, Mike has helped Chapel Hill Realtors become more familiar with the attributes of the county.

Mike lives in a custom built home by G. Crabtree Homebuilding, a member of the Valley Meadow Builder Team, in Hamlet Grove in Chatham County. John Coffey developed Hamlet Grove in 2001. With Mike's wife Susie, they have three children, Catherine, Laura, and Coley. All three girls attend the Perry Harrison School, a School of Excellence. They thoroughly enjoy living in Chatham County.

John Coffey has been an integral part of Chapel Hill area real estate for decades. In 1972, he joined Mel Rashkis & Associates as a realtor selling and listing land. Combining his love and knowledge of the land with his affinity for designing and planning communities, John developed his first neighborhood in 1976. Having a deep appreciation for natural beauty, John has focused on creating places to live amidst nature. John's skill as a developer can be seen throughout the 28 neighborhoods he has founded in Orange, Chatham and Alamance Counties including Laurel Springs, Monterey Valley, Mill Valley and Ridge Springs. Valley Meadow holds special significance for John, and his associate Mike Shachtman, because they feel the neighborhood presents ideal attributes: spacious, wooded homesites; superior, local custom builders crafting quality homes; convenience to work, schools and shopping and low county taxes. John, and his wife Araya, are long-time residents of North Chatham County. He is proud to be engaged in enhancing his community by establishing exceptional settings for people to live.
